The problem
You can’t drill into tile in a rental — and even if you were allowed, drilling tile badly cracks it and costs you the deposit. So everything has to stick, wedge, or hang.
The trouble is that bathrooms are the worst environment for all three. Adhesive hooks that hold fine in a bedroom fall off the shower wall in a fortnight, and tension rods slide down the tile at 3am.
That failure isn’t random. It has a specific cause, and the fix is surface preparation, not a stronger product.
Why adhesive fails in bathrooms specifically
Three things work against you:
- Humidity weakens the adhesive bond. Steam gets behind the pad over time.
- Glazed ceramic tile is extremely smooth — too slick for the rubber ends of tension rods to grip, and offering little for adhesive to key into.
- Soap film. This is the one nobody accounts for. Overspray leaves an invisible residue on tile and it’s effectively a release layer. You are sticking the hook to the soap, not the tile.
The single highest-impact step: clean with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely before mounting. Not a bathroom spray — those leave their own residue. Alcohol strips the soap film. Most adhesive failures in bathrooms are surface-prep failures.
Then leave it to cure before loading it. Adhesive mounts reach full strength after about an hour; hanging something immediately is the second most common cause of failure.
What works
Tension rods, correctly prepped. The rubber end needs friction. A rubber pad, silicone dot, or a piece of shelf liner under each end holds for years and peels off cleanly. This is the standard rental fix and it costs almost nothing.
Adhesive mounts rated for wet areas, on a properly cleaned surface, cured before loading.
Over-door hooks on the bathroom door — no adhesive involved at all, so no failure mode. See the over-door post for door thickness limits.
Freestanding over-toilet units. Zero wall contact, and they use the most reliably empty vertical space in any bathroom.
Suction cups on glass, not tile. Suction works on shower glass and mirror. It does not work reliably on textured or grouted tile — there’s no continuous seal.

Adhesive on an unprepped tile. Soap film. Alcohol first, always.
Loading adhesive before it cures. Wait the full hour.
Suction cups on textured or grouted tile. No continuous surface to seal against.
Tension rods with bare rubber on glazed tile. Too slick. Add a pad.
Anything heavy on adhesive above a bath. When it fails — and eventually it will — it falls onto a hard surface, or onto you.
Adhesive on painted drywall in a steamy room. It often takes the paint with it when removed. That’s a deposit problem. Prefer tile, glass, or tension.
