The Drawer Divider Sizes That Actually Fit IKEA Drawers

The problem

You measure the top of your IKEA drawer, buy dividers to match, and they won’t drop to the bottom. They wedge halfway down, or they sit at the base with a visible gap at the top.

Nothing’s faulty. IKEA MAXIMERA drawers have sloping sides — they’re narrower at the bottom than at the top. The internal dimension changes depending on how far down you measure.

Almost nobody knows this before they buy, and it’s the reason drawer organisers get returned.

The measurements that matter

MAXIMERA drawer sizes (nominal width × depth, inches):

• 15 × 14¾
• 18 × 24
• 24 × 24
• 30 × 24
• 36 × 24

Inner drawers (width × depth × height):

• Low: 30 × 24 × 3⅞
• Medium: 36 × 24 × 6½

The sloping-sides rule

Because the sides taper inward toward the base:

Measure at the bottom of the drawer, not the top.

A divider sized to the top opening will jam on the way down. A divider sized to the base will always fit — it just leaves a small gap higher up, which is cosmetic rather than functional.

If you want a snug fit at both heights, adjustable or spring-loaded dividers are the answer, since they expand to whatever width they’re sitting at.

Measure three things:

1. Width at the base, inside edge to inside edge
2. Depth at the base
3. Interior height — bearing in mind a low inner drawer is under 4 inches, so tall organisers won’t close

What works

Adjustable spring-tension dividers. Immune to the taper because they expand in place. The most reliable choice for MAXIMERA.

Modular trays sized to the base measurement. Buy several small ones rather than one fitted insert — small trays tolerate the taper, and you can rearrange them.

Bamboo expandable sets, sized to base width. Widely available and forgiving of the slope.

Anything sold specifically for IKEA drawers — but still verify against your own base measurement, since IKEA changes sizing across generations and product lines.

What fails, and why

Anything measured at the top opening. The taper. This is the whole post.

Rigid fitted inserts sold as “fits IKEA.” Which IKEA drawer, at which height, from which generation? Verify against your own numbers.

Tall organisers in low inner drawers. A low MAXIMERA inner drawer is 3⅞ inches; most standard organisers are 4 inches or more and stop the drawer closing.

Dividers that rely on friction against the sides. Sloped sides mean the grip changes as the drawer fills. Spring-tension is designed for this; plain friction isn’t.
